Introduction

Testosterone is the major androgenic hormone that is responsible for the growth and development of masculine characteristics. In addition, testosterone possesses protein anabolic properties, manifested by retention of nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium, and is important in maintaining muscle mass and bone tissue in the adult male. It is also converted by aromatization to estradiol in peripheral tissue. It has been synthesized for replacement therapy, in the form of various esters having prolonged duration of effects, in treating male hypogonadism, cryptorchidism, frigidity, inoperable female breast cancer, oligospermia, to suppress lactation, and as an anabolic agent.
